Is the Sinner’s Prayer Found in the Bible?

Have you ever been told that in order to be saved that you need to say a prayer and ask Jesus to come into your heart? That’s what we’re going to be discussing today on answering the error hi I’m Don blackwell and this is Aaron Gallagher we’d like to welcome you to this episode of answering the error answering the error is a rather unique program in that we examine videos that teach religious error and we expose that error in the light of the Bible a program such as this is unique because we live in a very politically correct world in which many would believe it is inappropriate to tell someone else that they are wrong we however believe that it is not only not wrong we believe it is essential you know when dealing with a matter as important as someone’s eternal salvation we can’t afford not to expose error Galatians chapter one in verse eight the Bible says but even if we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel to you than that which we have preached to you let him be accursed and we want to say at the very beginning that it’s not our intention to be combative we’re not trying to be ugly toward anyone our intention is to teach the truth that will set men free from sin John 8:32 Aaron told us about the video that we’re going to be examining on today’s program so the video today was sent in to us by a viewer and they said well you guys please watch this video and analyze it it’s by a man named John Hagee and it teaches what’s commonly titled the sinner’s prayer so this is the video on the main part of their website titled in the section how do I become a Christian so we have reached out to him directly and hopefully we receive a spawn so a response so we can discuss with him okay and we always extend this invitation as Aaron has said to the speakers because we would welcome a public discussion of this we’re not just trying to pick on them but we’d be delighted if he would respond and we could follow up all right let’s roll the video the greatest question in the Bible is this what will you do with Jesus who is called the Christ how do you come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ you know rather soon here in the video Aaron but mister Hagee says that the greatest question in the Bible is what will you do with Jesus how do you come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ he says that’s the greatest question in the Bible do you agree with that statement I would agree with him you know John 12:48 talks about that we’re going to be judged on judgement day by the words that Christ spoke so we obviously want to look to Scripture and see how we answer that question so I’d agree I agree as well this question or one like it what must I do to be saved is ask several different times in the Bible and because it’s of such great importance we’ve got to get the answer to this question right absolutely okay let’s continue first you recognize that you need him and that you have sinned and come short of the glory of God as we all have done the Bible says in Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God I have sinned and you have sinned but because we have sinned we must have the blood of Jesus Christ to cleanse us from all sin our morality can’t save us our goodness cannot save us our acts of kindness to the poor cannot save us all right Aaron in answer to the question what must I do to be saved first he says you need to recognize that you need Christ that you have come short of the glory of God and he points out that only the blood of Christ can save us he says our goodness cannot save us helping the poor cannot save us I think we would all agree with this would we not absolutely I mean the Bible says we’ve all sinned as he quoted Romans 3:23 we’ve all send him fall short of the glory of God so we need that blood of Christ to save us the New Testament says the blood of Christ reconciles us it forgives our sins it’s redeems us so may I agree up to this point with everything he said you know what are you saying so far is Bible okay let’s continue the Bible says we must confess our sin for if we confess our sin he is faithful and just to forgive us of our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness all right in this part Aaron he quotes first John chapter 1 in verse 9 if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness what’s what’s wrong with this well first John 1:9 is a beautiful verse we talked about first John all the time and it’s such a comforting passage but there’s a problem and that is that it’s being pulled out of context so the question we’re discussing is how does a person initially go from being not a Christian to a Christian lost to saved and unfortunately first John is not talking about that it’s discussing how a person who’s already a Christian has their sins forgiven so that would be pulling this passage out of context to be honest with it yeah yeah that’s right I have often times in fact when I was a child for a period of time I actually attended a denominational school and I remember them teaching this to us as I got older I realized this is not written to what we would call an alien Center this has written to people who are Christians in fact eight verses after this statement he calls them brethren these are people who are already brothers in Christ they are already Christians and there’s definitely a difference in what a non-christian needs to do to be saved and what a Christian needs to do when he sins and Mister Hagee is taking this passage for what a Christian needs to do and he’s trying to apply it to a non-christian and that is right never ever ever is a non-christian told to confess his sins in order to be saved and I would even say if you want an example let’s go to Acts chapter 8 you’ve got Simon the sorcerer he hears the gospel he believes it says he is baptized also just like the other people some people say that well he was never converted that’s not what the scripture says it says that he believes he’s baptized and then after that he sins now he’s now he’s not told to be baptized again right he’s told to repent and pray to God right so there’s two different you know laws of pardon the first one repent be baptized we’ll talk about the rest of that second once you’re a Christian already that’s when first John 1:9 comes into play that’s exactly right alright let’s keep going I want you to understand that God can save to the uttermost it makes no difference what you have done his amazing grace can reach you God loves us even though we have rebelled against him the Bible says in Romans five and eight but God demonstrates his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us God made it possible through the gift of his son for you and for me to be saved okay he says that God made it possible through the gift of his son for you and for me to be saved course that is absolutely right my problem is with not the fact that God made it possible through his son it’s how the Bible says God made it possible and how Mr Hagee is going to say it is possible because the two are not in line with each other it did occur to me listening to him the guy’s got a very nice voice he’s sounds very professional but he doesn’t got the radio voice it’s very smooth and you’re right a lot of the things he’s saying are scriptural but you’re right the point of that we’ve sinned that we’ve fallen short of the glory of God we need forgiveness it’s by grace God’s grace our faith mercy all that is spot on but then when you get to the the plan that leads up to that he’s leaving at one crucial step but this is a significant thing and that is so much of what he’s saying is right out of the Bible and it’s accurate and sometimes that’s how false teachers will lure a person in because they’re saying some things that are right and a person will look in their Bible and they will say yo that that is right that’s what the Bible teaches but we’ve really got to dig in and go further here that’s right all right let’s keep going that provision is God’s gift the Bible says clearly for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life and Jesus Christ our Lord it is through grace that you have been saved through faith it is not of yourself it is the gift of God not by works so that no one can boast you only get to heaven because you confess your sin there must be the repentance of sin repent means to turn away it means to walk and go another direction alright I wanted to stop here just to trace what he said thus far he gives us a third thing that he says must be done in order to be saved first he says that you must recognize your need secondly he says you must confess your sin now he says that you must repent so just want to trace this and follow what he’s saying for us perfect alright let’s keep going the Bible says if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead you will be saved and you must be willing and ready to confess your sin to be saved alright now he’s gonna quote Romans chapter 10 and verse 9 that we must confess with the mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart and you will be saved the Bible does say this but then he adds and you must be willing and ready to confess your sin to be saved Aaron where was the scripture for that part so the first part Romans 10:9 and then he’s kind of conflating Romans 10:10 with first John 1:9 first John 1:9 we dealt with that as a different context Romans chapter 10 and verse 9 in Romans chapter 10 verses 1 through 4 Paul’s discussing his desire for his Jewish brethren and so he goes down and he mentions in this passage belief and confession notice he doesn’t mention a repentance here right so sometimes you’ve got to take this portion of Scripture and then bring in other passages to get the full picture so it’s not all in this one passage it’s interesting to me he’s gonna repeat it repeatedly keep coming back and saying you must be willing and ready to confess your sins in order to be saved but the Bible doesn’t say in order to be saved initially that a Christian needs to confess his sins he needs to confess his belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God that’s exactly right okay if you want to find Christ he’s as close as a prayer and I want you to pray this prayer with me right now Lord Jesus Christ I confess that I’m a sinner I asked you to forgive me of my sin I asked you to cleanse me from all unrighteousness come into my heart today and be the Lord of my life I will serve you I will obey you I will read your word and I will follow Christ from this day forward all the days of my life Jesus you are now my Lord and my Savior and I am your servant amen Aaron first I want to ask this question he has said this prayer that he indicates is the point at which a person is saved this really is going to be the meat of this discussion where did he get this prayer can you turn in your Bible and show me this prayer or anything akin to this you won’t find it in the Bible I’ve read my Bible I’m sure as you have dozens of time times cover to cover you will never find a sinner’s prayer in the Bible you’ll never find it in the you find sinners praying but never a center to praying for salvation I do a lot of teaching videos on Instagram with our live account and I’ve told people I’ll give you $1,000 if you can find a sinner’s prayer in the Bible for me if you can find somebody in the New Testament after the day of Pentecost when the church was established that prayed for their salvation I’ll give you $1,000 you can use Google and nobody’s ever been able to give it to me because it’s not in it’s not in the New Testament it’s something that men have concocted this is the most critical thing that we’re going to get out of this entire video and that is he has said this is what you need to do to be saved and there is no example of this prayer in the Bible there is no example of anything akin to this prayer in the Bible and we really want to drive that point home in fact in the New Testament after after the church began in Acts chapter 2 there are numerous accounts of people being saved not one of them was saved by saying a prayer in Acts chapter 2 you’ve got the people on the day of Pentecost being saved where they say by saying a prayer there were not they were not Acts chapter 8 you got the people of Samaria who were saved were they saved by saying a prayer they were not either Acts chapter 8 you’ve got the Ethiopian eunuch he was not saved by saying a prayer Acts chapter 9 you’ve got the conversion of Saul he was not saved by saying a prayer Acts chapter 10 you’ve got Cornelius not saved by saying a prayer Acts chapter 16 is Lydia not saved by saying a prayer acts 16 the jailor acts 18 the Corinthians acts 19 the Ephesians none of these conversion accounts or any others were saved by saying a prayer that is very very significant the prayer is concocted it’s not in the Bible all of these examples of people being safe none of them followed the pattern that mr. Haji has laid out now there is one example of a person in the Bible who was praying for salvation and that is Saul who later became the Apostle Paul tell us about him if you were to look in your New Testament the book of Acts for the conversion of Saul the Apostle Paul you’ll find it in Acts chapter 9 chapter 22 and 26 different accounts of his conversion this is my favorite thing to show somebody there’s no way that a prayer will save the center why because Paul did that if you look at your Bibles in Acts chapter 9 and verse 9 we’re gonna connect three verses acts 9 9 it says that Paul was three days without sight neither ate nor drank so for three days he doesn’t eat or drink anything because Jesus has told me you’re persecuting me my church right verse 11 the Lord said to Ananias go to the street called straight inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus that’s Paul for behold he is praying so Paul is praying likely for three days if you’ve killed Christians the first thing you’re praying for us please forgive me so he prays for likely three days but yet when Ananias gets to him and this is recorded in acts 22:16 so you got to put some passages together what you have is Ananias says to Paul and now why are you waiting arise and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the Lord so you put those together you’ve got Paul who’s been praying for likely three days but we know he’s been praying and Ananias says your sins aren’t forgiven yet so that’s a perfect example that praying did not wash away Saul’s sins and so if his sins were not washed away by praying but he had to arise and be baptized that’s the Bible teaches that’s what we should be teaching so I want to emphasize three things and number one the prayer that he has laid out we can’t find anywhere in the Bible nowhere number two we just went through numerous conversion accounts that are in the Bible none of them said a prayer in order to be saved and the third thing we do find an example of a person who’s desperate wanting to be saved who is praying and yet his prayer did not save him that’s right alright let’s go back to the video and that simple prayer you have stepped from darkness into light you have now identified with the family of the Lord Jesus Christ and your spiritual brothers and sisters are waiting to see you this Sunday morning all right mr. Hege says in that simple prayer that he just gave us in that simple prayer you have stepped from darkness into light now again he made this prayer up nothing like this in the Bible then he says you have now identified with the family of the law of Jesus Christ is this how a person identifies with the family of the Lord no if you look in the New Testament you’re gonna see when you think about the term family you’re gonna see Galatians 6:10 the household of faith Ephesians 2:19 I believe this household of God so to get into God’s family or God’s household first timothy 3:15 says the house or household of god depending on your translation which is the Church of the Living God so God’s family first timothy 3:15 is the church so how do you get into the family is how you get into the church so that’s what you need to find out you need to find out how to be identified with the family of God how to be identified with the church and so the New Testament connects those two terms so that’s what we need to find out how to have your sins forgiven to get into the church yeah very good very good in fact here’s a passage I think is very relevant to this how do you become a part of Christ a part of his body listen to this this is 2nd Timothy chapter 2 in verse 10 Paul said therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory now two things that are key there they obtain the salvation it is in Christ Jesus how does a person get into Christ Jesus wherein is salvation now listen to this passage Galatians 3 and verse 27 it says for as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ and so a person is baptized into Christ that’s how I get into Christ that’s how I get into the family into the body of Christ is through baptism and he says that’s how I enter the place where in salvation not by a prayer but finally at the point a baptism and you mentioned Galatians 3:27 we’re talking about getting into the family of God well how did I get into the Gallagher family I was born into it and that Galatians 3:26 you are all sons of God you’ve been born into the family your sons of God how by faith for verse 27 as many of you guys have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ very good very good okay let’s continue I encourage you to go to a Bible preaching church this Sunday I know we’re stopping quickly here but I wanted to point this out he says I encourage you to go to a Bible believing or Bible preaching church this Sunday he says that immediately after giving us a quote plan of salvation which is not found in the Bible there’s just some irony involved in this every person that I’ve ever talked to when I ask them about their church they say that they’re a Bible believing Bible teaching Church the problem is a lot of those people are honest and good people be deceived and so what we need to do is find out you know what is the church teaching are they teaching all of the Word of God or just a little bit yeah that’s right okay let’s continue go to a church where the preacher gets up and preaches from the Word of God a church where the preacher makes an altar call and gives the people the opportunity to be saved okay he says go to a church where there is an altar call what is an altar call where do you read in the Bible in the New Testament about an altar call you don’t you don’t read about in the New Testament what is an altar call it’s kind of this idea at the end of a sermon you know Billy Graham made these famous with his big stadium I’ve seen a video he’s in Texas Stadium 55,000 people and he gave the altar call come down here give your life to Christ through a prayer come down the aisle and you you see this in a lot of churches but the problem is you see it in churches but you don’t see it in the Bible right and so if any man speaks let him speak as the Oracles the word of God first Peter 4:11 so we need to go to the scripture and you don’t find this in the Bible he just got through saying be sure you go to a church that preaches the Bible so did New Testament preachers give an altar call the answer is they did not know all right let’s continue that’s where you’re hearing the gospel god bless you and congratulations on your new life in Jesus Christ final segment here he says that’s where you’re hearing the gospel go to a church where they have an altar call where they are preaching the truth he says that’s where a place where you’re hearing the gospel and he says this after repeatedly offering a plan that is not the gospel now I want to quote a passage that we began with once again Galatians chapter 1 and verse 8 Paul said but even if we or an angel from heaven or I would add even a well-known denominational preacher preach any other gospel to you than that which we have preached to you let him be accursed now we don’t say that in a mean way in fact we said in a concern and a loving way and that is Paul said even if an angel preaches a different gospel a different plan to you than he is to be accursed we have just pointed out that mr. Hagee has laid out a plan that we can’t find this in the Bible we can’t find this prayer in the Bible we can’t find anyone in the Bible practicing this the one example the closest we can find someone attempting to pray with regard to his condition and it did not save him so would you suggest that he is preaching quote another gospel I would yes kindly but lovingly I would assert that he is preaching another gospel and you know the viewers that are watching this if you’re watching we love you number one we mean this in the most gentle way that we can but I would say if you’re going to a church that has an altar call contact us we will find you a new church you should not be attending a church that’s teaching you to be saved a way different than Peter and Paul did in the New Testament so contact us if you go into Church it says say a sinner’s prayer has an altar call contact us we’ll find you a church that teaches the truth of what the New Testament teaches sure and anyone who does call us if we say anything to you that we can’t give book chapter and verse and show you that they did that in the New Testament then you don’t need to listen to us either because it’s gotta have book chapter and verse gotta have Bible for it now let me ask this question we have just a few minutes left Erica where do people get the idea that they need to pray in order to obtain salvation where does that idea come from every person that I’ve ever talked to has either went to first John 1:9 or Romans 10:13 whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved there’s a misunderstanding about what calling on the Lord actually what if calling on his name actually means right in fact probably one of the best examples that I know to explain what it means to call upon the name of the Lord is in Acts chapter 2 this is the first time this comes up in the New Testament and this question or this statement is May and the very first gospel sermon is made by Peter Acts chapter 2 and verse 21 Peter says that whosoever calls on the name of the Lord whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved the people continued listening to his sermon and they interrupted Peter and they said what shall we do now Peter has already said whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved in essence they are saying explain that what do we need to do in acts 2:38 Peter says that every one of you repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins we need to let the Bible to find its own terms people hear the idea whosoever shall call upon the name well that must mean prayer call upon the name Lord that’s not the way the Bible defines it no one if you think acts 22:16 I just say please if you disagree with us go study that verse Paul’s already prayed for three days and yet Ananias says arise be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the Lord so Ananias gives us through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and Paul is speaking he’s saying look calling on the name of the Lord is not prayer because he hasn’t done it yet calling on the name of the Lord is arising and being baptized and that’s how you wash away your sins absolutely we only have about three minutes left here but after getting this prayer that he’s listing that supposed to save a man think we’ve clearly shown from the Bible that is not what a person needs to do to be saved we would be remiss if we did not answer the question what does a person need to do to be saved what does the Bible say that a person the the examples we gave of all of the different conversion accounts and people being say what did those people do in order to be saved they all did the same thing in the New Testament and that is first of all that a man has to hear the gospel faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God and so that’s the first step the after you hear the gospel you need to believe in it John 8:24 unless you believe that I’m here you’ll die in your sins after you hear and believe you need to repent acts 2:38 the people who are already believers sometimes people say well belief and repentance are inseparable Grace’s not in acts 2:38 they already believed and they said what do we do and Peter says you need to repent so belief and repentance were separated there so hear the gospel believe it repent of your sins confess Christ and then as we both know that you need to be baptized immersed in water for the forgiveness of remission of your sins so here believe repent confess be baptized here believe repent confess be baptized that doesn’t line up with the steps that mr. Hagee just gave us and he left he said believe hear believe repent confess and you’re saved and you know I don’t think maybe he even knows this but the devil all he needs to do is get us to leave out one step and he’s succeeded and so Matthew 7:21 talks about that day of judgment so many people Lord Lord and he says the part I never knew you because you didn’t do the will of the Father so we have to make sure that we’re adding all of the steps and not leaving off the last most important one in the process it’s not more important than the others but we have to fulfill all those steps you know when you look at the five steps that are laid out and we only have about a minute and a half left here but when you look at the five steps that are laid out there’s such a beautiful simplicity in the flow of these things a person first has to hear the gospel if he doesn’t hear it he has no hope because the hope is in the gospel upon hearing it naturally he is going to believe it what is he going to believe you cited John 8:24 jesus said if you believe not that I’m he you shall die in your sins this involves understanding the deity of Jesus Christ this involves understanding the death and burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ it involves understanding the body of Christ that is the Church of Christ so you hear it you believe those things once you believe it it’s going to prick your heart it’s going to cause you to repent the biblical definition or explanation of repentance is a change of mind that results in a change of life once hearing it believing it you then repent because it to pricks your heart you’re going to confess it what you’re confessing is not your sin but simply I hear these things and I believe them and then you respond in baptism where your sins are washed away we’re out of time for today Aaron there’s been a good discussion we hope that you’ve enjoyed this lesson if you want to know more about what a person needs to do to be saved we hope that you will contact us at the gospel Broadcasting Network and keep watching answering the error
