‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus (Glenn Colley) at Polishing the Pulpit 2019

In 1880 Luise instead was on the beach with her husband and her four-year-old they were having a picnic at Long Island Sound New York there were some children playing in the water just a little ways off there and in a few minutes there was some screaming because one of the children had I guess going out too far and the undercurrent you know and he was in trouble and and Lisa’s husband just altruistic Lee just did the natural thing and he ran out there to try to save the boy but the same kind of current that was taking the boy under it it took him under – and they both perished and Louisa was there watching with her little girl I do not know about Louisa and her religion so far as I can tell from history she wasn’t a member of the Church of the New Testament but soon thereafter she wrote a song which New Testament Christians had been singing for over a century now and it went like this tis so sweet to trust in Jesus just to take him at his word just to rest upon his promise just to know thus says the Lord Jesus Jesus how I trust him how I’ve proved him oran or Jesus Jesus precious Jesus Oh Oh for grace to trust thee more oh how sweet to trust in Jesus just to just to trust his cleansing blood just in simple faith to plunge me Neath the healing cleansing flood oh how sweet to trust in Jesus and then the last verse was I’m so glad I learned to trust the precious Jesus save your friend and I know that thou art with me will be with me to the end and I suppose that people who are unbelievers might look to those of us who are Christians and when we face these kinds of things life’s bitter enigmas then might say there you are there’s the god you serve then I suppose this ought to do it for you now after all you serve this King Jesus and where was he where was he and how come you didn’t protect your husband and then this very strange thing I suppose to the world we Christians we gather around the casket of our loved ones you’ve done this and we sing tis so sweet to trust in Jesus instead of driving us far away from him it drives us closer to him and why is that true why I came tonight to talk about that and what I want to do is to draw four clauses out of the lyrics that Louisa wrote four important clauses and draw the heart to raise them to our attention and talk about them it is so sweet to trust in Jesus just to take him at his word that’s the first one just to take him at his word now I suppose there are four different ways a categories of ways that people could approach the Bible I mean I suppose that we could either accept it as the Word of God and trust it we could just out now deny it we could twist it and pervert it to fit our own agendas or I suppose we could just simply ignore it and pay no attention at all to it but what the lyric has to do is something that’s a profound truth that is to trust him with a childlike faith to know that the Word of God is just that just in simple faith to trust him and that’s what distinguishes the Lord’s Church you know I mean you think about how different we are it really comes down to this it’s the view of the scriptures you think about for example our worship as we’ve been offering it to our Lord tonight and we sing congregationally acapella reciprocal singing you know why we do that of course you do you don’t verses there eight verses in the New Testament which have to do with disciples of Jesus Christ singing praise to God all of them have a consistent theme which is that this is Apella that never never ever ever do you have any kind of musical instrument being played and when you talk about congregations getting together but the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another there’s reciprocal singing singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord just simple faith just in simple faith to trust him and then that’s what you think about how different we are and teaching about how a person becomes a Christian and that baptism is how we make contact with the blood of Jesus Christ and all the pushback all the the pushback against that and and yet you know it’s mighty hard first Peter says the like–figured wearing to baptism doth also now save us mighty hard to disassociate baptism then from being saved and and what the Lord said about you know he that believes and is baptized shall be safe most of that is single-syllable words just in simple faith to trust him just to just just to take him at his word it’s kind of a childlike approach to scriptures I like it very much the emerging church movement dealt so many families a terrible blow even some in the church a few years ago and even exist today and the tentacles are so far-reaching and the emerging church taught a number of things that harmed people’s faith still doing it today but I would suggest that that perhaps the largest was to suggest and teach people a lot of times college students that the Bible of course is not inerrant are you excuse me you could still read the Bible you still trust the Bible go ahead and trust it but just know that it’s not an errand and besides that Jesus Christ is not infallible there were times when Jesus said you know he still trusts him he’s still your saver and all that that’s fine but just know that sometimes he said let me tell you something those young people opened up that door to accept it that sort of thing and I’m telling you they were on a pathway to just lose their faith right now we have doctrines like that I’m telling you the second Timothy chapter 3 16 and 17 teaches that the Bible is verbally inspired but not just that there’s a secondary thing which is that it’s all sufficient I would say to you that there’s never been a false doctrine created in the heart or the imagination of man that’s not answered somewhere in the scripture all of it is and you’re right now you have this rejuvenated Earth idea and some preachers I think I don’t know why they’re doing it but you say whoa so is that a big deal there’s a big deal I mean after all go to heaven stay here on earth what’s the difference and people are saying you know I’m not gonna go to heaven when I died after the Judgment Day I’m gonna stay on earth and what’s the difference now tell you what the difference is is that you’ve got very plain statements in Scripture and you start teaching this fanciful idea and what’s going to happen is you’re going to jeopardize people’s faith in the Word of God that’s what you’re going to do you know second Peter 3 and 10 but the day of the Lord will come you think it will I mean that’s a pretty plain statement the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise the elements shall melt with fervent heat the earth and the works therein are you ready for this shall be burned up you reckon he meant that I tell you what now the next verse says seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved what manner of persons ought you to be in all holy conversation go to this I take you one thing you you you can talk to the Lord about that if you won’t do when you see him but I want to spend my eternity in heaven with my father you see because my inheritance first Peter chapter 1 is in heaven in the dwelling place of God where Jesus sits on the right hand of God Colossians chapter 3 now I suggest to you I understand the importance of apologetics I love apologetics and I understand the importance of seeking Greek words in the original languages and exegesis I understand all of that and how very valuable so long as you don’t approach the scriptures with an attitude that says this is what I believe in let me see if I can find it in the Bible what you’re going to do is approach it with with the childlike faith that says the Bible is going to have the final say and what I believe in practice just to take him at his word number two just to know thus saith the Lord do you know that what you’re doing in Christ is the right thing do you know there really is a God do you know that Jesus really is his son do you know that the Bible really is the inspired Word of God do you know yes the answer the answer is yes tis so sweet to trust in Jesus just to know thus saith the Lord and the and the evidences of course are rather abundant I mean empirical evidence is in evidence which I draw from my census and some of my faith is based on that I guess I mean Romans chapter one in verse 20 says the invisible things of God by the creation of the world are clearly seen being understood by what’s made and I’ll tell you what that’s profound isn’t it you think about the creative genius of God you think about the human body I can see you is that amazing I’m looking at you right now and I can see you I can see people in the back and people in the front I can see color I can go out tonight and drive my car on the highway at 70 miles an hour with the use of just some headlights and I can do so with relative safety it’s not amazing to you well it shouldn’t be I’ll take something else too after we’re gone and I go home I’ll be able to remember PTP membered all through the year there’ll be things that’ll come up in the pop in my mind and I’ll remember people I talk to and lectures I listen to and having a wonderful time that I’ll be able to remember do you appreciate the profundity of that do you know that there’s a God do you know and the Bible says that I’ve proved him I mean the song rather says I proved him or and or I’m telling you I’ve done that you have to we do it all the time is it really true that it’s better for people to obey the Word of God that did not obey the Word of God have you put it to the test I think you think about Matthew chapter 5 to love your enemies and bless them that curse you do good to them that hate you is that a good policy or what about the golden rule the greatest ethical principle ever known to man Matthew 7 and 12 to do unto others as you’d have them doing to you is that is that good or evasion chapter 5 and how God designed marriage to be you reckon that’s the best way for relationships of this sort is that the best way I’ve proved him Orin or what do you know I know because of the miracles of Jesus the greatest statement about the miracles of Jesus is found in John chapter 3 and verse 2 in my opinion when Nicodemus said rabbi we know that you’re a teacher come from God because no man can do the things that you do except except God be with him don’t you love that and but the same thing is applicable to you because of John chapter 20 and verse 30 many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book but these are written that you might believe and believing you might have life through his name in Acts chapter 2 and verse 22 when Peter was preaching at Pentecost not not two months had passed since Jesus was crucified I’m telling you this is a hostile atmosphere to Christianity you understand that don’t you you’ve got these people listening to Peter and the others preach the gospel and in verse 22 Peter says now this Jesus of Nazareth was attested by God by miracles and wonders and signs God put his stamp of approval that Jesus is his son and he did it with the miracles and then Peter said which he did Jesus did in the it’s too few which you also know you know you know he did it do you did they miss miss becomes very interesting to me I I wasn’t there that’s a couple thousand years ago but I become very interested to kind of hold my breath how they’re gonna react to this when a preacher points at them and says Jesus performed miracles in front of you and you know it’s true because you saw it are they gonna bolt are they gonna throw tomatoes at it what are they gonna do and the answer is three thousand of them said I’m gonna wear his name baptize me for the remission of sins baptize me because they did know it was true just to know that says the Lord just to know oh how sweet here’s number three to trust in Jesus just to trust his cleansing power just in simple faith and get this terminology don’t you love this to plunge me Neath the healing cleansing flood now we assumed that Louisa wrote that and borrowed that kind of imagery from from William Cowper about a hundred years prior to that when he wrote there is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins and sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains no no about you but I tell you I I love that because it it expresses a truth that that I’m not just a little bit in Christ I’m in Christ I was plunged into the blood of Jesus Christ now when does that occur Revelation chapter one and verse five says that that you and I are saved by the blood of Jesus unto him who washed us with his blood but didn’t tell me when that happens acts 22 and 16 tells you that and now why tarriest thou arise and be baptized and wash away your sins unto Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood what are you waiting for arise and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the Lord now get this please it’s so sweet to trust in Jesus because because when I was baptized I didn’t merely need a plan by which I could have my past sins forgiven oh oh I needed that but I needed something more and all of us did I need a plan by which I can live in a saved condition is that true 1st John chapter 1 says by the way if if we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us do we sometimes sin now what are gonna do with Christians sins there are two extremes about this one is Calvinism in you’re familiar with the tulip of Calvin at common ism and the bottom one on that list at tulip list is preservation of the Saints we sometimes say once saved always saved it’s just a deeply false doctrine 1st Corinthians 9:27 or 2nd Peter 3:9 it’s just always been false of course it’s the case that a person can be in a safe condition and then live in such a way as to leave the Lord and be lost but follow me at the other other end of the spectrum on what God does to deal with Christian sins is another extreme that’s also false and that extreme is that every time a Christian sins he loses his salvation until he has a chance to pray and confess it don’t get me wrong I understand the fact that first John 1 7 through 9 says if we confess our sins he’s faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness of course that’s true but I’m here to tell you that that’s part of living the Christian life that’s just a part of walking in the light and you and I praise God live in a saved condition you go ahead and try to live with the gospel and it not be true you go ahead and try to try to calculate this and think about what it would be you think you ever commit sin some ignorance if you answer yes to that then what you did is to make life pretty miserable for the man who believes every time a Christian since he loses his salvation alright and go ahead and try to teach somebody the gospel go ahead so I’ll tell you what you need to obey the gospel this is the good have your sense punched away but of course because you’re gonna be a brand new Christian a babe in Christ and you don’t know a great deal about the Bible what’s gonna happen is that you’re gonna you’re gonna make some sins to commit sense of ignorance and and and you’ll be lost every time you do that you know you’ll return to being lost in and in all probability in the first few years you’re gonna be probably lost more than you’ll be saved the best you can hope for is being saved and damned to save the damned to save the damned is that the good news is that in now follow me three verses of scripture first John chapter 1 and verse 7 if we walk in the light that simply means if you study the New Testament and live to follow its precepts I’m following the teachings of the New Testament you walk in the light as he is in the light we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin and the import of the Greek language there is that he continually cleanses us he continually cleanses us of our sin Romans chapter 8 and verse 1 says there’s now therefore no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus a hell doesn’t exist for faithful Christians who sometimes send out of ignorance sometimes out of omission or Commission sometimes out of foolishness but we walk in the lion we walk after the spirit means the same thing we live our lives according to the teachings of the new testament and everyday I strive to be what God would have me to be and sometimes I stumble and in Romans chapter 4 and verse 8 says blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute sin doesn’t charge you to his account about whom is he speaking who do you suppose that’s applicable to it’s applicable to the people who have been plunged beneath the cleansing flood that’s who it is praise God because when you grasp this reality now you hear me say this this isn’t a comfort to a person who’s a member of the church and the elders can never depend on it because he’s a yo-yo he’s up and down up and down and never faithful I don’t reckon there’s any comfort in here for that man but for those of us who are living our lives look around you but those of us who are living our lives to walk in his light to be like Jesus I’m yes sometimes stumble I’m telling you we live in a safe condition and when you grasp that and when you get that reality what happens is you want to sing something like this tis so sweet to trust in Jesus Jesus Jesus how I trust you how I proved him or in or Jesus Jesus precious Jesus all for grace to trust him more now here’s the next one number what number am I on turn the next one I’m sad to say that this is the last one I wanted this is number four here’s the last this is the last of the song the last verse I’m so glad I learned to trust thee precious Jesus Savior friend and to know and to know that thou art with me will be with me to the end I I’ve never talked to anybody who’s died I’ve talked to a few people who have told me they died but but they didn’t you know Hebrews 9:27 it is appointed unto man once to die and after that the judgment so I think I think they believe that they did but they were mistaken that that’s not really what happened but I can tell you something about about people and dying I’ve been present a few times in my life when people slipped over into the timeless side of eternity I’ve witnessed that a few times and we have this discomfort with death we we have a fear of death and what the Lord came to do is to take that away and then we’ll taste something I’ve been around a lot of Christians they’re laud Christians in this room who are not uncomfortable with the idea of dying it often you know you’ll hear comments about it I I’m eager to go to the other side just can’t wait to see the other side you know who you know who made that possible for you is Jesus he took away the sting of death and so you have second Corinthians chapter five and verse four the Bible says that and I just love this that mortality is swaddled up of lives you ever see it an underwater video of a bass a largemouth bass and he’s just going along and and there’s a little fish in front of him and and it doesn’t break his pace he keeps his pace and as they get close it’s close to that little fish that mouth just opens up and he envelops that little fish and he just goes on his way that’s what I think about when I think about this verse you you afraid of dying you you afraid to die and will taste something Jesus came to make it well you’re not afraid to no I understand that you you don’t want to go through that process nobody does especially if it means suffering and you and I have witnessed that haven’t we we know what that’s like I mean we’ve seen it I don’t want to do that that’s why the old timers used to pray give us a peaceful hour in which to die but I’m not afraid to die you see because mortality you understand that word don’t you see that’s all we know that’s how who we know mortality though has been swallowed up of life so Paul said in first Corinthians 15 and verse 54 that death has been swallowed up a victory and though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for thou art with me thy rod my staff they comfort me and for me to live is Christ and to die is gain and then in a knee bruise chapter 2 and verse 14 for as much as the children CS you and me are partakers of flesh and blood he himself likewise took part of the same listen closely that through death I’m talking about Jesus that through death he might destroy him that has the power of death and deliver them who through fear of death we’re all their lifetime subject to bondage I’m so glad I learned to trust thee precious Jesus save your friend and I know that thou art with me will be with me to the end then one day you and I are going to leave this old world I don’t know it may be that we leave because the Lord returns we don’t know when he returns it’d have been nice if it he told us you know when he was going to come I suppose I’d like that but we’d have made a mess of it I suppose lots of people would have just lived like the devil – they got to be a couple of weeks before the time and they’re too repented that’s not what he wanted he wanted us to live for him to live faithfully for him all this life really is as a testing ground to see how we will obey Jesus Christ how you doing on that how you doing on that and one day you’re going to leave this old world and so am I probably in death you know what you’re gonna take with you you’re just gonna take one thing yeah you’re gonna take your relationship to the Lord what you’re going to take with you is the salvation promised you by the Lord that’s it that’s really it you know first John 2 and 25 this is the promise which he promised us even eternal life you’re going to leave everything else behind what you’re going to take with you is the promise of eternal life from Jesus that’s it that’s okay right you’re okay with that right see because limitation chapter 3 and verse 23 is this beautiful or why the Lord this is ultimately true this is the ultimate reality for every Christian ready the Lord is my portion that’s what you’ve got says my soul therefore I will hope in him tis so sweet to trust in Jesus just to take him at his word just in simple faith to trust him he plunged beneath the cleansing flood and he’s going to be with me to the end Hebrews 13 and 5 is a promise from your Lord and it goes like this I will never leave thee nor forsake thee so that we may boldly say the Lord is my helper and I will not fear what man shall do unto me and tonight you and I from our hearts respond to him I will never leave you nor forsake you have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power are you washed in the blood of a lamb there is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins and sinners plunged and sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains would you like to obey the gospel tonight would you like to wear his name would you like to know thus saith the Lord and prove him or and or with your life you know what now would be such a wonderful time to do that don’t leave tonight without obeying the gospel repent and confess his name and will immerse you into Christ in the way that Jesus told us to do when he said he that believes and is baptized shall be saved and ax2 says he will add you to his church and if the trumpet should blow tonight and be okay and if you should draw your last tonight I’d be okay too because the Lord is your portion says your soul and you’ll hope in him and if you’re a member of the body but you need to make things right and you know it yes that’s a great time to do that and we’ll be so pleased to pray with you and for you we’re going to sing a song of encouragement and if you’d like to respond come now as we stand and see – so sweet atrocities us just taking – one choice a wrassle on his promise judge-sir know the safer Lord Jesus is us how I trust him powerful team or a nor Jesus is us
