I guess it is obvious to you and has probably been pointed out already that the lessons today are linked together does God exist and they’re all questions does God exist if God exists what does he expect of us and if God exists where do we go when we die what happens to us when this life is over you know I guess that is a question that every person who has lived any length of time on this earth has thought about because as we live we see those around us dying at a very young age perhaps we can remember our grandparents dying as we get older we see our parents died in 2007 I lost my father to death and I remember at that moment thinking what was it like what what did he experience at that moment when he breathed his last breath as we get older perhaps we see our siblings and and our spouse and it is evident to us that we too one day are going to die and we can’t help but wonder what it’s going to be like after that now the religious world has given us all sorts of answers to this question some have put forth the idea of reincarnation that is that you die and you come back as another being on another a creature and they will say that if you haven’t to live the good life you might come back as an animal if you’ve lived a good life you may be a human being if you lived a really good life you might be a good-looking and rich human being and you know some people have the idea don’t SWAT that fly it might be uncle Ricky you know that that sort of thing and and then some have put forth the idea of a ghost that is our soul or our spirit remains on this earth and and it haunts a particular area I remember watching television one night and it was a documentary on the civil war but they were talking about the fact that if you go to certain areas of the civil war that you could still hear the ghosts of soldiers who were killed there and one man had set up a contraption to to try to record this some in fact the Roman Catholic Church has set forth the idea of purgatory that is you die and you go into a place of suffering and you you spend time there until you have paid your debt paid your dues and then you were released from there and you can go into a place of reward and of course very popular these days is the idea that when you die you simply cease to exist that when you breathe your last breath that is the last coherent thought that you will ever have what about this you know as people who believe in the Bible we can know the answers to the questions not only where we came from but we can also know where we’re going and that’s what we’re going to talk about this question where do we go when we die is a fascinating question and it’s one that I think people are enthralled with in fact not long back I put this video together we have released this lesson or one very similar to it on a DVD we put it on YouTube for free for anyone to watch and at the number of views were having per day by the end of this year it will have been watched over 1 million times and I’ve asked why why is that one so much popular than others and I think it’s because everybody knows it is coming everyone knows they’re going to die and everyone one wonders what’s it going to be like after that now I’ve put together a chart that we’re going to use to help us trace the journey when I first wrote this lesson I entitled it the journey of the soul from birth to eternity but you know as I got to thinking about that I thought that’s not really a proper title because the human soul doesn’t begin at the point of birth the human soul begins before that now I want you to watch the chart as I click the next slide here do you see the arrow coming down to the earth that is representative of what Ecclesiastes chapter 12 and verse 7 says listen to this this is a verse we oftentimes use it funerals but listen to the end because it tells us something very important about the beginning of man’s soul it says then the dust shall return to the earth as it was and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it the Bible tells us that the spirit of man begins with God Hebrews chapter 9 and verse Hebrews chapter 12 and verse 9 calls God the father of spirits and so at the point of conception when the egg meets the sperm and a new human life is created God places in that little teeny tiny human being a soul he places a spirit there mom and daddy might give that child his physical characteristics but they don’t give him his soul God gives the soul genesis chapter 1 in verse 26 god said let us that is the Godhead let us make man in our image after our likeness ever thought about that what does that mean that we are made in the image of God I think there’s a lot of things entailed in that but primarily I think that has reference to the fact that we have a soul we are eternal beings who will live for ever and ever and ever never cease to exist you ever think about that and ponder that we’re different from the animals that way we have something that is special and unique and so from the time that God places that soul in the in that teeny tiny human being that soul will continue to dwell in this body until I die listen what the Bible says in 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 1 for we know that if our earthly house this tent that’s interesting the Bible calls this body a tent why is that a tent is temporary if you go out into the woods you don’t build a building you build a tent because it’s temporary listen he says we know that if our earthly house this tent is destroyed he says we have a building from God a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens this body is a tent one day he says we’re going to get a building first Corinthians 15:54 calls our physical body mortal and it says that it is corruptible and so for seventy years or 80 years if you live a long life your soul is going to dwell in this physical body it’s temporary housing now during that time I’m gonna worship God tomorrow morning I’m going to go to worship services at the South Haven Church of Christ where I preach and I’m gonna sing and I’m going to engage this physical body and I’m gonna move my lips and I’m gonna use my tongue and my vocal cords and so I’m going to engage my physical body but the seat of worship is not the physical body the seat of worship is that spirit that God placed in me listen to it John 4:24 God is a spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and ensures I worship God with my soul with my spirit I love God with my soul the Bible says in Luke chapter 10 and verse 27 you shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart all of your soul all of your strength and all of your mind and so God places a spirit into this body it’s a tent for 70 years or 80 years that spirit dwells in this body during that time I worship God with my spirit I love God with my spirit all the while the body is wearing out now in cleese EOS T’s chapter 12 there’s a very eloquent description by Solomon of the wearing out of this tent listen what he says Ecclesiastes 12 and verse 1 he says remember now your Creator in the days of your youth before the difficult days come he says remember God when you’re young when you get old he said life gets harder in many ways he says and the years draw nigh that you say I have no pleasure in them I’ve sometimes heard elderly people talk about the fact that life is hard I remember one of my favorite all-time preachers brother Wendell Winkler near the end of his life he had cancer and I remember him saying brethren I am ready to go home he wasn’t talking about his house he was talking about leaving this body listen what Solomon says the years draw nigh and you say I have no pleasure in them and the Sun and the light and the moon and the stars are not darkened that is as the body begins to wear out you begin to lose your eyesight he says and the clouds do not return after the rain in the days in which the keepers of the house tremble what’s he talking about you get old and he says your hands begin to shake he says the strongmen bow themselves because they are weak he’s talking about your legs your legs get weak and you fall down he says the grinders cease because they are few what’s that a reference to begin to lose your teeth he says they that look through the windows grow dim in the days he says when the doors are shut in the streets the sound of grinding is low when one rises up at the sound of a bird you don’t sleep as well as you did when you were a young person he says and the daughters of music are brought low you began to lose your hearing he says they are afraid of heights there is terror in the way you know walking in a high place is very disturbing he says why probably because your legs are weak you might fall down he says when the almond tree blossoms what is that a reference to if you’ve ever seen an almond tree when its flowering it’s just a beautiful white and silver and he said it’s like the head of the hair it begins to turn white and you look out and you see that now for some of us the leaves just fall out but it’s the same thing he says and the grasshopper is a burden that is a very small creature is is difficult now desire fails you don’t have the same desires that you did when you were a younger person he says and man goes to his eternal home now listen the mourners go about the street you know what that’s a reference to remember your Creator in the days of your youth he says before the silver cord is loosed before the golden bowl is broken or the pitcher is shattered at the fountain or the wheel is broken at the well in other words you die now listen then shall the dust return to the earth as it were now here we go and the spirit shall return to God who gave it now that’s going to get us to our question for 70 years 80 years my spirits been dwelling in this body and then the time comes that I’m going to die you know Hebrews 9:27 says it’s appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgment sometimes I hear people talk about they’ll write a book that I died and I went to heaven and and then I came back and they write a book about the things that happen you know what I don’t believe that why because the Bible says it’s appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgment but this bridge this is the journey that every person will take unless the Lord comes while I’m still living let’s talk about death for a minute for 75 years my spirits been dwelling in this tent Psalm 90 and verse 10 says the days of our years are seventy years if I recent of strength they are 80 years yet their boast is only labor and sorrow for it is soon cut off now listen to this last part and we fly away the Lord says you may live to be seventy years if you’re really strong and healthy you might live to be 80 years old he says but then you die and that’s the fascinating part to me he says we fly away my body stays here the tent but the part of me that is me he says flies away Genesis chapter 35 and verse 18 the Bible describes forced the death of Rachel she died during childbirth listen what the Bible says and it came to pass as her soul was in departing that’s interesting language she’s dying and the Bible describes it as her soul leaving her body James 2:26 as the body without the soul or the the body without the Spirit is dead and so when I die my soul is gonna leave this old corruptible body the question is where does it go now somebody says well done on the day of resurrection we’re gonna get a new body I know that what about in the meantime what about before the day of judgment listen what the Bible says 2nd Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 1 says for we know that if our earthly house this tent is destroyed we have a building from God a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens the Lord says right now you’re in a tent your spirit resides an attempt one day it’s going to get a building that is a permanent eternal resurrected body that’s not temporary but keep reading verse 4 for we who are in this tent groan being burdened not because we want to be unclothed but because we want to be further clothes that mortality may be swallowed up in life now there’s some very interesting language here because he speaks of being in this body as being in a tent and then he speaks of the resurrected body as a building eternal in the heavens but then he speaks about being unclothed when is that going to occur when I die and my soul leaves this body there’s going to be a period of time when my soul my spirit does not have a body it will be unclothed if you want to use that language that’s the language the Lord uses when I die and my spirit leaves this body before it gets the resurrected body where does it go that takes me to the next part of this chart the second part of this chart this whole second section is the Hadean realm this is Hades now people oftentimes get confused about this because they think of Hades as referring to Hell they think that Hades is the place of punishment that is not right the word Hades actually is a word that means the dwelling place of the dead it is kind of a holding area for for disembodied spirits the good who die go to Hades the bad who die go to Hades I think part of the reason that we’re confused about this is because the King James version of the Bible translates the word Hades as hell that’s not a correct translation but that’s how it’s done it and it confuses us in the original language Hades ha days and hell Gehenna are two different words Hades is the dwelling place of the Dead Gehenna is hell it is the place the wicked will go eternally in the King James it translates Gehenna and ha days as hell and that’s caused a lot of confusion for instance in Matthew 16:18 jesus said upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it that’s what the King James says the word in the original is not hell it is the word Hades what Jesus was saying was this his disciples had been following him he was telling them that I’m gonna build a kingdom a kingdom is going to come but very soon he’s gonna die what were they gonna think when he died they’re gonna think well the kingdoms not coming so what did he tell them the gates of Hades that is the realm of the Dead I’m gonna go into the realm of the Dead but that’s not gonna prevent my kingdom from coming that’s the point of that passage it’s not a reference to hell it’s a reference to his death now if we don’t know the distinction between these two words we’re gonna get very confused now incidentally as a side note the Old Testament word for Hades the Hebrew word is Sheol SH E Oh L in the New Testament it’s Hades Hades and Sheol are the same place it is the dwelling place of the Dead once you understand that all people go to Hades when they die it’s going to clear up some things for you for example Acts chapter 2 and verse 31 refers to Jesus after his death as being in Hades the King James says hell it is the word that refers to Hades Jesus did not go to hell when he died he went to Hades when he died how do I know in Luke 23:43 just before Jesus died he told the thief on the cross today thou shalt be with me where in paradise when you understand that paradise is in the round the dead or in Hades it makes sense now the best description we have in the Bible of Hades is in Luke chapter 16 I want you if you’ve got your Bible I want you to turn there with me Luke chapter 16 beginning in verse 19 and I want for us to read it together and then we’re gonna make some observations Luke 16 and verse 19 Luke 16:19 the Bible says there was a certain rich man which was clothed with purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus which was laid at his gate full of sores and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table moreover the dogs came and they licked his sores and it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the Angels into Abraham’s bosom the rich man also died and was buried and in hell as the word Hades actually and in Hades he lifted up his eyes being in torment we’re told he died and he went to Haiti specifically then he says in torment and see if Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom and he said father Abraham send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue for I am tormented in this flame but Abraham said son remember that thou in thy lifetime receive us thy good things and likewise Lazarus evil things but now he is comforted and now art tormented and besides all of this between us and you there’s a great gulf fixed so that they who would pass from hints to you cannot neither that can they pass to us who would come from thence now I want to begin and look at the top of the chart here in the blue I want to look at the place where Lazarus was taken we’re told that Lazarus died and he was carried by angels to Abraham’s bosom this is the part of Hades where the righteous go to await judgment is the place called paradise it’s the same place Jesus referenced when he told the thief on the cross today thou shall be with me in paradise Luke 23:43 Luke 1625 says that in this place the righteous are comforted in fact the etymology if you do a word study and you go back in and study this word paradise it carries with it the idea of a pleasure garden it is very interesting to me that when the righteous die immediately there are angels waiting to take them to this place you know many studies have been done asking people what is the greatest thing you fear and there are lots of things that people fear people fear public speaking that’s usually at the top of the list but always near the top of the list of things people fear is death it is fascinating to me that when a righteous child of God a faithful Christian dies immediately there are angels waiting to escort him to paradise is that so that we won’t have this fear I think it is notice that when the rich man died he did not have angels waiting to escort him the opposite section of Hades is where the rich man went this is a place of torment this is the section of Hades that is called Tartarus in the original language this is the word that appears in 2nd Peter chapter 2 and verse 4 where the Bible says for if God spared not the Angels that sinned but cast them down to Tartarus is the word in the original and delivered them into chains of Darkness to be reserved unto judgement that is they are waiting until the day of judgment now this place is described for us this way in verses 22 and 23 verse 22 says the rich man also died and he was buried verse 23 listen what he says and in Hell in Hades he lifts up his eyes being in torment normally when I preach about this I like to spend some time talking about the misery in this place the suffering in this place we could spend the entire lesson just talking about that I’ve got a lesson just on this but very briefly I want you to observe with me the rich man who died is burning in fire the rich man who died is crying out he’s begging for mercy he believes that a mere drop of water on the tip of his tongue will bring him a moment’s relief and I want you to appreciate with me that every person from the beginning of time until now who has died lost in the eyes of God is right there right now some of them have been there thousands of years some of them have been there for months some of them probably for just moments another observation I want to notice about this place is that there is consciousness in the Hadean realm now there is a doctrine that is taught by some in the religious world specifically the jehovah’s witnesses teach this it is called soul sleeping this doctrine says that when a person dies that he slips into a state of unconsciousness and he ceases to be aware friends this passage as well as many others in the Bible teach that when a person dies he is very much aware of what is going on the rich man is crying in pain Lazarus is comforted you know Psalm 116 of verse 15 says precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his Saints I don’t think the Bible is telling us it is precious to God when I become unconscious and don’t know anything that’s not the point of that passage I preached one time in McMinnville Tennessee and it was a sermon akin to this similar to this and when I got done I walked I was standing at the back door shaking hands and a man walked out and he handed me a folded up piece of paper and he shook my hand and he said that was a good lesson he said but you’re wrong about there being consciousness in the Hadean realm he said you need to read this first and he handed it to many walked off and so I unfolded it and I looked and it said Ecclesiastes 9:5 the dead know not anything as a side note that’s exactly the way the Jehovah’s Witnesses used that passage but he was misinterpreting that because he was pulling it out of context if you look at Ecclesiastes chapter 9 and verse 6 the very next verse you will see the phrase under the Sun khaleesi Assis 9 3 under the Sun 9 9 under the Sun 9 13 under the Sun the context of Ecclesiastes chapter 9 is things going on on this planet in this world that is things under the Sun now the point is when you die and you go to paradise or to torment you no longer know what is going on back on the earth under the Sun that’s the point I remember there was a song that came out a few years ago I can’t remember who sung it but there’s a country music song and the song said there are holes in the floor of heaven and she’s watching over me you remember that song and the idea of the song if I remember it right was a man had lost his wife and they had little children and he raised his daughter up and it gets to the point that she has her her wedding day and she’s getting married and he says that mama is in heaven and she’s watching over you and and it’s a very comforting idea that people put forward that when people die they go into the realm of the dead but they’re watching us but the Bible says that’s not how it is and you don’t make sense if you think about it could you imagine being in heaven or in paradise and seeing all the terrible things happening in this earth I can’t wrap my mind around how that could even be the case and so the dead know not anything back on the earth now somebody says dawn I disagree with you I think you’re wrong about that I can prove it listen to this second chronicles chapter 34 King Josiah was told by God God said I’m gonna bring punishment upon Jerusalem for their sins he said but Josiah you’re gonna die before it happens listen to the word second chronicles 34 and verse 28 he says surely I will gather you to your father’s he said that is you’re gonna die and you will be gathered to your grave and peace therefore your eyes will not see all the calamity that I shall bring upon this place and its inhabitants what’s the point of that you’ll have died you’ll have gone to the Hadean room so you’re not gonna see this you’re not gonna know that you’re not gonna be watching over this the dead know not anything that’s going on back here one final thing I want you to notice about the Hadean realm if you look at the chart between paradise and torment you see the green line the green line here is representative of the great gulf that is mentioned Luke 16:26 says between paradise and torment there’s there’s a divide there’s a gulf there’s a chasm so that people can’t pass from one side to the other that means that once you’re in paradise you are there to stay until the day of judgment once you’re in torment you are there to stay until the day of judgment that means the doctrine of purgatory is not correct it also means that every person who has ever died unfaithful in the eyes of God is still there and I think about them suffering I think about them burning in fire I think about the torment in the agony and some for thousands of years and and they’re crying I’m tormented in this flame but it never ends that takes us to the next part of this chart this is the resurrection the resurrection day is typically called the Judgment Day the Bible sometimes calls it the day of the Lord Peter says the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night 2nd Peter chapter 3 and verse 10 so when the day of the Lord the Judgment Day when that day comes what is going to happen to the souls who are in Hades if you die and you’re in paradise or you are in torment when the day of judgment comes what is gonna happen listen to me on that day Hades is going to give up its souls it’s going to be emptied of souls and the earth is going to give up its bodies and they’re going to be reunited I know what you’re thinking hold the thought for a minute John chapter five and verse 28 says this jesus said the hour is coming in which all that are in the graves this is the Greek word that means tomb shall hear his voice and they shall come forth they that have done good and the resurrection of life they that have done evil unto the resurrection of damnation and so what is going to happen on that day is the soul is going to be reunited to this new resurrected body but here’s the thing it’s gonna be a different body the resurrected body is not going to be like the physical body that I have right now the resurrected body is not going to be the same particles if you want to use that is it’s not going to be flesh and blood in the years I’ve been preaching sometimes I’ve had people come to me and and they’ve been worried about cremation because they said Don you know I’ve got my loved one and and they’re interested in being cremated but I’m worried about that because they said I remember one lady said seems like that’s gonna be a problem on the day of resurrection if we cremate them not going to be a problem it’s not going to be a problem how do I know that because their resurrected body’s not going to be the same material if you want to use that term as this body how do I know first Corinthians 15:50 says flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God the resurrected bodies not going to be flesh and blood listen to this first Corinthians 15:44 says the body that is the physical body is sown in corruption the resurrected body is raised in incorruption it is sown in dishonor it is raised in honor it is sown a natural body it is raised a spiritual body it is sown in patan weakness is raised in power now let’s break that down he says the resurrected body is going to be incorruptible this current body is subject to death it gets old it wears out all the things we just read in Kelis he asked these twelve about losing your sight your well that legs getting away he says that’s the fiscal body the resurrected bodies not gonna be like that he says that the resurrected bodies going to be a glorious body you know if we are honest we would admit that there are many things associated with this current body that are lowly and vile he says that’s not gonna be the case with the resurrected body he says that the resurrected bodies going to be raised in power this body gets gets old it gets weak it gets tired he says the resurrected body is gonna be capable of unfailing vigor and unwearying activity he says this body is a physical one but the resurrected body is going to be a spiritual one so the Judgment Day is going to be the resurrection day it’s the day that Hades is going to be empty and it will be destroyed it is the day that we will get our new resurrected bodies I want you to listen to this first Corinthians 15:54 says so when the corruptible has put on incorruption that is we get our new resurrected bodies and this mortal has put on immortality listen then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written death is swallowed up in victory Oh death where is your sting o Hades where is your victory for years I did not understand that passage because I said it sounds to me like death is not going to be defeated until the day of judgment I thought death was defeated at the cross I was very puzzled about this but I finally finally clicked with me listen what he says death where is your sting Hades where is your victory what he’s saying is this on the day that we get our resurrected bodies that is the day the realm of the Dead and Hades is going to be destroyed that’s the point of that verse if somebody says well don what about those who are still living what if the Lord came today we’re not in Hades we’re not in paradise what if the Lord comes today what’s going to happen to us first Corinthians 15:52 says in a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last Trump of God the dead shall be raised incorruptible that’s people in Hades and we shall be changed that is those of us who are living those who are living are going to be changed to their incorruptible body and then we will all be called to the next part of the chart this is the judgment after the good and the bad received their resurrected bodies we’re all going to stand before the judgment throne of Christ Matthew 25 32 says all nations shall be gathered before him and he shall separate them one from another as a shepherd divides a sheep from the goats ladies and gentlemen all of humanity is going to be there on that day the rich man and Lazarus will stand and receive their eternal judgment from God on that day Abraham Isaac and Jacob will stand before we will stand before God on that day a have Jezebel and Judas will stand before God Romans 14:12 says so then every one of us shall give an account of himself to God 2nd Corinthians 5 and verse 10 says for we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that every one may receive the things done in his body according that what she’s done whether it be good or bad sometimes people will say well what’s the point of the Judgment Day anyway if you’ve already been in paradise or you’ve already been in torment kind of seems like you’ve already been judged I don’t see what the point of having a Judgment Day is but you know I think sometimes we think about this incorrectly we think the Judgment Day is a day in which God’s gonna look at the facts and he’s gonna say well yeah okay he gets to go to heaven yeah he gets he’s gonna go to hell that’s not what it is God knows that the moment you die fact he knows before you die where are you gonna go this is not a day in which he weighs the evidence we might more accurately refer to this as the pronouncement of Judgment Day this is the day in which God is going to state their reasons why you are lost or he’s gonna state the reasons why you are saved ladies and gentlemen I do not believe there will be a single person in Hell who doesn’t know why he is there and there will not be a single person in heaven who doesn’t know why he is there so on that day the Lord is going to say come you blessed receive the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world and then he was an he’s going to give the reasons why I was hungry he fed me I was thirsty you gave me he’s going to tell the reasons why it’s the pronouncement of Judgment Day now somebody says well done it still seems kind of unnecessary to me the righteous and the wicked already know where they’re gonna spend their eternity why did they need this let me suggest to you that the Judgment Day is necessary for several reasons number one it is necessary for those of us who haven’t died yet if we haven’t gone to Paradise or we haven’t gone to torment is it’s necessary for us secondly the judgment is necessary so that righteousness can be displayed now you say what are you talking about I want you to think about this the last time the world saw Christ he was dying on the cross as a criminal now you say no no remember he was seen after the rezident he was seen by his disciples after the resurrection the last time the world saw him he was being condemned as a criminal but on the day of judgment every eye shall see him as the righteous and innocent judge it’s necessary for that reason it is also a day of exposure the reasons why a man is lost will be stated the reasons why a man is saved will be heralded and it is also the day in which death will finally be defeated that brings us to the next part of this chart this is eternity Matthew 25:46 the Lord said in the east shall go away into everlasting punishment but the righteous into life eternal it is interesting to me the word everlasting and eternal the wicked and the righteous it is the same greek word you know what that means the length of time a person will spend in heaven is the same length of time that a person will spend in hell now man has been created in the image of God and thus we have been given an eternal soul a soul that will never cease to exist I will be forever and ever and ever friends that ought to scare us to think about that if we’re not right with God now when you look at the chart if you look at the top you’ve got heaven you look at the bottom and you’ve got the dark pit and the fire this is hell there are two alternatives where you can spend eternity I said that one time in an older preacher came to me afterwards and he said Don you can’t spend eternity he said if you spend something you use it up if you spend something you you deplete it he said you can’t spend eternity and I said all right you know what I mean at two places you can be for eternity one is a place of eternal bliss that’s the top it’s the death the destination of the faithful it is heaven to them Jesus will say on that day come you blessed of my father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world Matthew calls it life eternal the other destination at the bottom is a place of eternal torment it’s like torment but this is eternal torment it is hell it’s the place the Bible describes in Revelation 21:8 as the lake that burns with fire and brimstone which is the second death it’s the place the Lord has in mind when he says in Matthew 25 these shall go away into everlasting punishment how long is Hell going to last listen to this it’s going to be eternal everlasting forever and ever revelation 14 and verse 11 says and the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever and they shall have no rest day or night Prince I cannot imagine anything more terrifying than that a man who dies and goes to hell has tomorrow and the next day and the next year and the next 100 years in the next 1 million years and the next billion years and he never gets any closer to the end where I preach there is a man who has a clock and it’s broken and so what happens is the the minute hand clicks and it goes – and it goes back it ticks forward and it goes back to – I told him I’d like to have that clock I said because it’s a good representation of eternity you never make any progress you’re there forever and ever friends I’ll tell you this when I think about dying and going to hell it makes me think I will do whatever I have to do I don’t care what I have to give up I don’t care what I have to confess I don’t care what changes I have to make in life because dying and going to a place where I am eternally lost I can’t think of anything more terrifying than that it’s a sort of thing that if you go home and lie in bed tonight think about it it will make the acid churn in your stomach and if it doesn’t make you want to get your life right there’s something wrong the soul of man enters his body at the point of conception for the next 70 years that soul dwells in this body I worship God with my soul my spirit I love God the day comes that this body dies and that soul leaves my body it goes into the realm of Hades it stays there until the day of judgement we’ll all be called before the judgment throne of Jesus Christ where we will be sentenced to eternity in Hell or we will be rewarded with eternity in heaven I want to tell you a story it’s a true story and I’m gonna wrap up this lesson I preached for about nine years in Charleston South Carolina and we had an individual in that congregation a family in fact that had been unfaithful to the church unfaithful to the Lord one particular Sunday night the husband the man the father showed up at services he didn’t come into the auditorium he said in the back and I saw him and I thought he’s going to make his life right tonight I thought he’s going to come forward and be restored but he didn’t when I walked out into the for year afterwards I shook his hand and we talked for a minute and he sent there with his face in his hand you could see something was just eating him alive but he left the next morning maybe the day after Monday or Tuesday morning he got on his motorcycle and he was riding to work it was raining that day we don’t know exactly what happened somebody has told me that a car hit the rear wheel of his motorcycle and he lost control and and his motorcycle hit the ground he didn’t have a helmet on in his head smacked the pavement they dispatched a helicopter from the University Medical University of South Carolina and they took him to the hospital they contacted his family and they traveled there I was told I wasn’t there at the time it happened but I was told that his wife stood next to his bed she knew she’d been unfaithful she knew her husband had been unfaithful they were both Christians they had the ability to pray to God and ask for forgiveness that’s one blessings of being a Christian they had that ability she stood next to his bed and the doctor said I don’t know if he can hear anything she held his hand and she said to her husband I’m gonna say a prayer asking for forgiveness that you get your life right and if you can hear this and you agree I want you to squeeze my hand she was desperate and so she did that and she said I think I squeak he squeezed my hand doctor said it might have been a reflex here’s the here’s the point you say why are you telling us this he was in his 40s I think all of us think preachers stand before us and they tell us things like this to scare us because they’re trying to motivate us we are trying to motivate you but the point is this this could happen to any of us we think we’ve got plenty of time don’t you know that when gym ball set in services that night in his 40s knowing his life wasn’t right that he walked out of there he set there that night with his face in his hands and he walked out of there thinking I’m confident he was thinking I’m gonna fix this just not tonight but you see he didn’t have opportunity to do maybe the Lord heard his prayer maybe he was brain conscious and could pray I don’t know that’s between him and the Lord but what I know is this we’re asking the question tonight where do we go when we die and the answer is it depends on where you are while you’re living if you go back to the beginning of the chart you see when you look at the earth you’ve got the saved and you’ve got the lost the saved is a smaller arrow and the lost is a broader one that’s because Matthew 7 and verse 13 says Strait is the way narrow is the way that leadeth unto life and few there be that go in there at that find it broad is the way that leads to destruction and what’s the Bible say many there be that go in there at the majority of the world is true is traveling the wrong path where you go when you die zhan where you are when you’re living if you are a faithful Christian a part of the one Church Jesus Christ purchased with his blood and you are traveling the path of the saved you will die you will see angels carrying you to paradise you will there until the day of judgement in which you will be sent to heaven eternally if you are not a faithful member of the New Testament church you will die you’ll open your eyes and torment and then you will spend eternity ultimately in the place that the Bible says was prepared for the devil and his angels where do we go when we die depends on where we are when we live I want to conclude by asking you a question if we pulled out of this parking lot tonight and a car struck you like a car struck his motorcycle seconds later what would you say would you open your eyes to see the angels and think I just heard about that or would you open your eyes and torment and think just heart that and for all eternity it’s too late thank you for your good attention I was told that we’re going to open the floor up to questions at this time if you have any questions I would be glad to do my best to answer them yes sir okay it is a complicated question let me see if I can clarify a little bit I have oftentimes heard people suggest that when Jesus died he went to hell and he actually preached to spirits who were in prison or they believed that reference to prison is a reference to hell you say where do they get that that is usually taken from first Peter chapter 3 and about verse 18 it says for Christ also hath once suffered for sins for the just and the unjust that he might bring us to God being put to death in the flesh being quickened by the spirit by which he also went and preached under the spirits in prison they interpret that to mean hell which sometime were disobedient when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared wherein few that is eight souls were saved by water the light figure wearing to baptism doesn’t also save us and people will take that and suggest that when Jesus died he went and preached to the spirits who were in prison they interpret that to mean hell first I would say this there’s nothing in the Bible that suggests that when Jesus died he went to hell Luke 23:43 jesus said today thou shalt be with me in paradise the place that Jesus went when he died was not a place where the wicked had gone it was a place where the righteous were going to be as is evident by what he told the thief on the cross now someone says well what about this passage I would say this is an interpretation that people have laid over this because they’ve seen this passage and they have suspected what they think it means I think there’s some clear passages like Luke 23:43 that tell us that is not what this passage means so what does it mean that Jesus went and preached to the spirits that were in prison and then specifically he talks about those who were disobedient when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah it seems to be saying this that Jesus somehow preached to some spirit some individuals who were lost specifically he says the the people who were disobedient and died during the flood if Jesus had gone and preached the lost people during the flood why pick out that group of people why would he give them a second chance I’m telling you that’s not the meaning of the passage then someone says then what is the meaning of the passage I think it’s this the Lord did preach to some individuals who were disobedient and what what is going on in 1st Peter chapter 3 is there’s a comparison that’s being made he is saying I want you to think about the people that live prior to the flood and compare it to the people living now the Lord preached to those people and they did not repent except for eight people who were saved by the water as it lifted the ark up to safety and he says in the same sense we’ve got preaching going to you today the majority of people are going to reject this preaching and are going to be lost except for a few in what sense did Jesus or how did the Lord preach to those people in the days of the flood he did it via Noah that’s how he did it Jesus preached to those people via know just like the Lord preaches to us today via faithful gospel preachers that’s what I think the meaning of that passage is there is no indication in fact I think there’s been confusion that’s taken place with some people because of acts 2 and verse 31 that says that Jesus went to hell when he died in the King James but that’s not the meaning of the passage it means Hades but people have seen that Jesus went to hell they tied that to first Peter chapter 3 and they have concocted a scenario that Jesus went to hell and they say well in prison that must mean those who are suffering and they put together this concept that the Bible doesn’t actually teach I appreciate you bringing that up though right I don’t believe that Jesus specifically went to anyone he preached to them via NOAA while these people were still alive he’s saying these people are now in prison but they were preached to prior to being in prison that that’s the point of the passage though great question though that’s oftentimes you brought up let’s see here are some that have been handed to me is purgatory a Bible doctrine no purgatory is not a Bible doctrine this is a concept that was put forth by the Roman Catholic Church and as we’ve seen as illustrate I’ve already pulled the chart down but as you could see what the Bible indicates is when we go into Paradise or torment there is a great gulf that is fixed you don’t go into one and pay your debt and then travel to the other nor is it the case that you can be lost and people can pay money to get you out of there which is a doctrine tied intimately to purgatory you can’t pay money you can’t pray I can’t do anything to change a person’s eternal destiny once they live in fact there’s not much I can do while they’re living except to teach them and to help them because each person’s going to be accountable for himself on the day of judgment let’s see are there different levels of punishment in hell you know I’ve sometimes heard this said I remember a few years ago there was a story that was that took place and the by or the the news story was about a woman who had been kidnapped when she was a little girl and a man kept her locked in in his house for years and he kept her as a sex slave and he got her pregnant and then somehow just a couple of years ago sheis can’t remember that story when I heard that it just burned me up it made me upset and I said to my wife there’s a hot place in hell for somebody like that and she said are you just saying that or is that really a Bible teaching I was saying that because I was very very angry that a person could treat another human being that way I do believe that the Bible teaches that they’re going to be degrees of reward and that they’re going to be degrees of punishment I do believe that with responsibility there is going to become there’s going to be accountability now somebody might say well that’s easy for you to say where can you show this let me show you this let me find a couple of passages I had in mind here here’s one in second Peter chapter 2 and verse 20 he says this and he’s talking about a person who obeys the gospel and then he leaves the truth and he goes back into the world the Bible says for if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ they are again entangled therein and overcome the latter end is worse with them than the beginning for it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness then after having known it to depart from the holy commandment delivered unto them but it has happened unto them according to the true proverb the dog is turned to his own vomit in the sow that was washed has returned to the mire what is the point of that the point of that is this he says the Lateran is worse than the beginning before they became a Christian what was their condition they were lost where were they going eternally they were going to go to hell he says so they become a Christian now they’re a child of God he says but then they turn away and they are going to go back into the world the latter end is worse than the beginning now here’s the question again what was the beginning condition lost now he says they are worse than that what does that teach you there’s something worse than being lost in fact I’ve got a whole sermon on this where I go through passages but yes I think the bible does teach they’re going to be degrees of reward and degrees of punishment for those who pass from this life here’s the next question what are the new heavens and the new earth you know it is put forth frequently by the Jehovah’s Witnesses and also by some in the denominational world to teach premillennialism that the day is going to come in which the Lord is going to set up a kingdom and we’re going to have a new heavens and a new earth here in this world the Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that there’s going to be a certain number who will fill heaven and the rest of us will have to live eternally in the new heaven and the new earth on this planet I want to suggest you the bible does not teach any such thing as that the bible does use the concept or the fray of a new heaven or a new earth what is that a reference to it means a new dwelling place what does he tell us listen to this 2nd Peter chapter 3 and verse 10 says but the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise and the elements shall melt with a fervent heat and the earth and the works therein shall be burned up what is the Lord saying there this earth is going to cease to be there will be no more earth it’s not going to be rejuvenated it’s not going to be burned off it is going to be the end of this earth so where is the new heavens and the new earth that we will dwell eternally listen what Jesus says in John chapter 14 and verse 1 let not your heart be troubled you believe in God believe also in me in my father’s house there are many mansions the word mansions there means dwelling places if it were not so I would have told you I go to prepare a place for you and if I go to prepare a place for you I will come again and receive you to myself that where I am there you may be also what’s the point of that the point is Jesus says there is adequate housing in heaven if you are faithful it’s not going to fill up and you have to worry about this earth being rejuvenated because that’s not what’s going to happen he says it’s going to be destroyed and that’s going to be the end of it but there’s room in heaven adequate room in my father’s house there are many mansions and if you’re faithful you’re gonna go there is what he says
