What to Expect When Visiting the Church of Christ

What should you expect to see when worshipping with the Church of Christ for the first time?

John 4:24 teaches us that God is a spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth it has always been the intention of the Church of Christ to do just that worship God in a manner that’s true and pleasing to him here are some of the things that you’ll see when worshiping with the Church of Christ probably the first thing you’ll notice about our worship is our congregational singing we don’t have a dedicated choir or a select group who sing psalms for the church the church as a whole is instructed to sing there is no Bible example of a choir during worship that is set apart from the rest of the worshippers Ephesians 5 and 19 tells us speaking to yourselves in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord Colossians 3 and 16 let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord the New Testament commands the church to sing it makes no mention of instrumental music and as such you won’t find any in our worship our congregations sing acapella without instrumental accompaniment we hope that you’re encouraged and uplifted by the singing just as much as the congregation is when the Lord’s Church gathers together for worship we participate in prayers offered to God usually by selecting a brother to lead the prayer of the whole body we find in the Bible many cases where the early church had prayer and during this time we pray for the needs of the church its work its troubles we pray for those who are struggling the sick the downtrodden and we thank God for all that he’s given to us James 5 and 16 teaches us to confess our faults one to another and pray one for another that we may be healed the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much during the assembly a brother will stand before the congregation and read and teach out of God’s Word this is a very serious responsibility the teaching of the church must always be based upon the scripture and not popular opinion during every lesson all are encouraged to open their Bibles and read study and follow along if those things heard taught are found to be true then meditate and act upon them our teaching is to be done in a single undivided Assembly the Bible tells us the whole church came together into one place splitting a church up into different classes is obviously the opposite of that and so our congregations don’t segregate according to age gender or marital status the whole church learns together as the Word of God instructs Romans 10:14 how then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed how shall they believe in him of whom may have not heard and how shall they hear without a preacher it is our hope that the teaching and preaching of God’s Word will stir you into becoming a Christian the Lord’s Supper or the communion is observed every first day of the week just as the Bible teaches in acts 20:7 this portion of our worship will likely seem the most peculiar to you as a visitor but it is a commandment given to us by Jesus on the night of his betrayal the New Testament tells us he took a loaf of unleavened bread the communion of his body blessed it broke it and then gave it to his disciples saying take and eat after they had eaten he then took a cup containing fruit of the vine the communion of his blood gave thanks and then gave it to his disciples telling them all to drink of it Jesus charged his disciples to do just as he had done and so every first day of the week we do just as the Lord did not altering the process in any way as such you’ll find one loaf of unleavened bread you’ll find one cup which to bless nothing more as Jesus used nothing more this portion of our service is the responsibility of members of the body of Christ and is not required or even asked of those who are visiting from the community in 1st Corinthians 16:1-2 we read now concerning the collection for the Saints as I have given order to the churches of Galatia even so do ye upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store as God hath prospered him that there be no gatherings when I come every Lord’s Day members offer a portion of money as they’ve purposed in their hearts to give back to the Lord so that the work of the church can continue these funds are used for the furtherance of the gospel and for poor and needy Saints if you are a visitor from the community this portion of our service is again not your responsibility but the obligation of members of the church please let the contribution simply pass you by as the members fulfill their obligation everything done by the church is ultimately governed by the Word of God and so the church does its very best to emulate the pattern of worship found in the New Testament we believe that Jesus is the head of the church and we follow the example of the early disciples as they followed his teaching what they did we try to do what they didn’t do we refrain from as such our worship service may not seem very flashy or modern but it is founded upon the Bible and anything that isn’t God will reject no doubt some of these practices seem strange to you especially if you’ve only ever attended services of a denomination don’t feel ashamed but do ask questions visit with the members of the church and inquire more into why we worship the way we do our intention is to give you Bible answers for Bible questions and our hope is to do Bible things in Bible ways we look forward to seeing you in our assembly and we hope you visit us at every opportunity that you have
